CURIA introduced in Senate by Sen. Joe Lieberman

CUNA President Dan Mica announced yesterday that Sen. Joe Lieberman has introduced a Senate version of CURIA, while a nearly identical bill is still pending in the House. Mica is asking credit union professionals to express gratitude to Lieberman for his initiative, noting “It is vital that Leagues and credit unions THANK SEN. LIEBERMAN IMMEDIATELY with e-mails to him and faxes to his office.”

CUNA has made responding to this call to action from Mica convenient and easy through the Cap Wiz tool on the CUNA Web site.

Go to the Cap Wiz page and select “Thank Sen. Lieberman.” You will be presented with some points to include in your personalized e-mail. Fill in the blanks, click on some buttons – and you will have thanked the senator from Connecticut! If you prefer to fax your letter, the fax number is (202) 224-9750.

NMCUEF scholarship winners announced

$48,000 in scholarships awarded

The New Mexico Credit Union Education Foundation recently awarded a total of $48,000 in scholarships to 80 students in New Mexico for the 2008-2009 school year. Each scholarship recipient received $600. Applications from more than 400 students were received.

Funds for the scholarship are provided by Credit Union Association of New Mexico member credit unions that turn over funds from dormant accounts to New MexicoCUEF to be used for scholarships, instead of to the state. CUANew Mexico administrates the scholarships.

Applicants must be New Mexico residents and meet a number of requirements, including grade point average and full-time enrollment. Many recipients are reapplicants.

Students may use the scholarship at any accredited vocational or technical school, college or university in New Mexico.

Since it was established in 1992, the New Mexico Credit Union Education Foundation has grown in both credit union membership and funds contributed. The purpose of the Foundation — the only one of its kind in the country — is to allow credit unions to use their abandoned funds for educational or charitable purposes through an established statewide foundation. As a nonprofit corporation, the Foundation is designed to foster educational opportunities in New Mexico.

Beware of scam using Del Norte CU's name

SANTE FE, N.M. (8/29/07)--Recipients should not respond to bogus phone calls and e-mails purporting to be from the Santa Fe-based, $302 million asset Del Norte CU, advises the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office.

The credit union and attorney general have verified that people in northern New Mexico have been getting phone calls asking them to respond to a toll-free number and furnish personal account information that includes credit and debit card numbers.

The toll-free number is a fraudulent phishing ploy, according to Karen Meyers, director of the state attorney general’s protection division.

An additional phishing scam is being conducted with e-mail asking people for their account information under the guise of coming from Del Norte CU, according to credit union officials.

At least 20 complaints have been received in the attorney general’s office, according to Meyers.

The credit union has worked with Qwest to get the toll-free number canceled, said Gus Lisella, Del Norte vice president of marketing. While the investigation into the matter is ongoing, credit union officials believe that the bogus phone number was set up in a foreign country, Lisella added.

Del Norte has set up an automated message that tells people not to provide account information to any calls offering a toll-free number.

MSN: Ditch your bank

Ditch your bank, says MSN Money columnist Liz Pulliam Weston in a column published online this week, adding, “Credit unions deliver big savings and better service for many consumers.”

In the article, Weston noted, “Because of their not-for-profit, cooperative structures, credit unions are exempted from most state and federal taxes. Banks have convinced themselves this is an unfair advantage and have spent a lot of effort, plus a fortune in lobbying fees, trying to legislate credit unions out of existence or at least limit who can join. (I guess they thought the money was better spent there than on, say, improving their interest rates, reducing their fees or slashing their telephone hold times.)”
